Barnes & Noble is having a Book Fair Saturday, June 8 from 9AM to 11PM, where you can support the Friends of the Southwest Branch Library by using the attached voucher when making your purchase. Friends will receive a percentage of those sales made with this voucher on that day. Also, at 11AM Cookie Mouse will greet kids and sign their books. The Friends will have a table where the library’s wish list of books will be displayed. You can purchase one of these books for donation to the library’s collection! What a great way to support your local library!

Water Exercise class June 6

The Water Exercise and Aerobics classes will begin this summer on June 6. Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 at the community pool. Joan Ferry will be conducting the class and providing humor.

The pool will remain open to all swimmers while the aerobics class is in session. There is room for all!

Come join the fun and bring your noodle (water noodle too)!

Cathy Peyton (AKA Sahdia Saraab) will be leading a group of belly dancers as they dance at various public locations across Pensacola on Saturday, May 11, 2013, in an effort to raise awareness and funding for the FavorHouse, a local women’s shelter.

The group of 36 local professional and amateur belly dancers will perform together in flash mob style, a Shimmy Mob. They will begin at the Southwest Library, 12248 Gulf Beach Hwy, at 10:00 am, making a stop downtown to perform at 111 E. Garden Street in front of the Medical Aesthetic Institute at 11:30 am, then heading to Art in the Park to perform at Fountain Square on E. Zarragossa St at 12:15 pm and again at 1:00 pm.

The dancers are hoping to raise awareness and funding for FavorHouse, the certified domestic violence center for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties of District I which has been helping women in the Florida Panhandle for over 30 years. Donations can be made directly to the FavorHouse at www.favorhouse.org or by calling 850-434-1177. All donations are tax-deductable. CHILDREN MAKE GARDEN BELLS FOR SPRING AT SOUTHWEST BRANCH LIBRARY

Ms. Amy and Ms. Lisa guided children and parents in another fun craft at the Southwest Branch Library; this time children painted and assembled a garden bell that can be hung anywhere they like: in a doll house, in a bedroom or on the patio. Home Depot-Mobile Hwy donated plastic organizers for the paint supplies. Children painted the pots, threaded twine thru large colorful buttons and beads with a bell inside to enable them to hang from a hook. Triggers Restaurant on Gulf Beach Hwy donated plastic cups used for paint. Paint, brushes and other materials were donated by The Friends of the Southwest Branch Library. Southwest Branch Library teen volunteer Kylie checked in the arriving families and handed out wet wipes at the end of the activity. Friends of the Southwest Branch Library volunteers MaryAnn Johnson, Sally Loudin, Charlotta Overton, and Dorothy Sergeant offered decorating suggestions, distributed supplies and helped with cleanup.

Joan Blackburn, well-known Pensacola artist and teacher whose specialty is water media abstracts and transparent watercolor still life, florals and landscapes, will exhibit her art from May 13 through July 30 at the Southwest Branch Library 12248 Gulf Beach Highway. Come and meet a “Civil War” soldier!

Herons Forest resident Phil Duryea and his friend Price Legg are scheduled for a Civil War program at Southwest Branch Library on Thursday, May 2nd at 5:30 PM.

Come and meet a civil war soldier! Families are invited to join Price Legg as he dons his Confederate reenactor’s uniform. Phil Duryea, Volunteer Coordinator for the National Naval Aviation Museum, will share artifacts from his extensive personal collection of Civil War memorabilia and authentic maps of the era. These descendants from opposing sides will be at the Southwest Branch Library on Thursday, May 2^nd at 5:30 PM and at the Main Library on Thursday, May 30^th at 5:30 PM. Seating is limited.

This program is sponsored by a grant from Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History from a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the Library of America. Library of America is a nonprofit publisher of classic American literature founded in 1979 with seed money from NEH.
